Estimated Fuel Savings
by SmartStart
1.
Displays an estimate of the
volume of fuel saved per SmartStart equipped Locomotive per year. The value is calculated from questions 2-5
and given in units selected in question 1.
Select the
units you wish the to base calculations on.
Example:
If you live in the United
States, you purchase fuel by the Gallon using USD - Select 'Gallon, lbs' as
your unit system and 'USD' as your unit of currency.

Estimated Savings in
Fuel Costs by SmartStart
2.
Displays an estimate of the
monetary value of the fuel saved per SmartStart equipped Locomotive per
year. The value is calculated from
questions 2-6 and given in units selected in question 1.
Locomotive availability is the
total expected amount of time your locomotive is NOT out of service or down
for maintenance or repair.
Example 1:
If you expect your locomotive to
be available approximately 90% of the time, fill '90' in to the field and
select '% of total time' from the drop-down bar.
Example 2:
Payback Period
If
you expect 37 days per year will be
spent on locomotive maintenance and repair or out of service, fill '328' into
the field (365 - 37) and select 'Days/Year', from the drop-down bar.
Displays
an estimate of the time it would take a railroad to recoup the cost of a
SmartStart system with the fuel savings achieved by a SmartStart equipped
locomotive. The value is calculated
from questions 2-7 and is given in months.
3.
This is the amount of time spent
idling while the locomotive is available.
You have the option to express this by percentage, average Hours/Day,
or Hours each day.
Example 1:
Estimated CO2 Reduction
(Equivalent)
If your locomotive idles
approximately 50% of the time, select '% of available time' from the
drop-down bar and fill '50' into the field.
Displays an estimate of
greenhouse gas emissions reduction achieved by a SmartStart equipped
locomotive per year. The emissions
reduction is estimated by 10.1 kg of CO2 equivalent per gallon of diesel fuel
saved through SmartStart idle reduction (Source: US EPA.)
Example 2:
If your locomotive idles an
average of 11 hours/day, select 'Hours/Day' from the drop-down bar and fill
'11' into the field.
Example 3:
If you know the amount of idling
your locomotive does each day of the week, you may input the number of hours
your locomotive idles each day separately.
Say if your locomotive idles 8 hours on weekdays and 16 hours on
weekends, fill '8' into the fields for Monday-Friday and '16' in the fields
for Saturday-Sunday.
Note: If you fill any value into the fields
Monday-Sunday, any value given for idle % or average idle Hours/Day will be
ignored. If you wish to use these
values in the calculation, ensure all fields Monday-Sunday are changed to '0'
Hours.
4.
SmartStart is able to greatly
reduce the time a locomotive spends idling, however it cannot eliminate
idling altogether. Fill in the field
with the amount of idle reduction you expect to achieve by using SmartStart. SmartStart generally reduces idling by 85%
in warmer climates and by 65% in cooler climates.
Example 1:
If you expect SmartStart to
reduce 85% of your idle time, select '% of idle time' from the drop-down bar
and fill '85' into the field.
Example 2:
If
your daily average idle hours is 12 and you believe that SmartStart will
reduce 10 of those hours, select 'Hours' from the drop down bar and fill '10'
into the field (the average daily hours spent idling will appear to the right
of the drop-down bar.)
5.
Fill
in the Field with the amount of fuel your idling locomotive consumes per
hour. Locomotives generally consume
between three and five gallons (11 -19 liters) of fuel per hour.
Example:
If your locomotive consumes 4
gallons of fuel per hour fill '4' into
the field. Your units of
'Gallons/Hour' will automatically be filled in.
6.
Fill in the amount spent on
fuel.
Example:
If you spend $2.75 USD/Gallon on
fuel, type '2.75' into the field. The
calculator will automatically fill in units of 'USD/Gallon' based upon your
entries in Question 1.
7.
Fill in the amount you have paid
or expect to pay per SmartStart system.
Example:
If
you were quoted $XXXXX USD for a SmartStart system, type 'XXXXX' into the
field. This will calculate the Payback
Period achieved by SmartStart.
Tip: To increase the accuracy of the calculated
payback period, try including installation and/or expected maintenance costs
in the purchase price.
